Tshwane Mayoral Mansion SOLD to build 52 RDP houses

The City of Tshwane’s mayoral mansion has been sold for R5.1 million from a reserve price of R4.8 million. From this sale, a total of 52 RDP houses inclusive of land and services will be built for those who need it most in the City of Tshwane.

The DA-led multiparty administration made it clear when they took office in 2016 that they will prioritize the needs of the residents of Tshwane, especially the poor and cut down on everything that the administration deemed to be frivolous.

After being voted in as the political head of the City of Tshwane, I refused to move into the Mayoral Mansion because I have long maintained, even during my days on opposition benches, that corrupt activities took place with respect to that house by the former ANC administration.

After an investigation, it was found that at least R12 million was spent to “renovate” the house. Yet the latest valuation on the property indicated that it could only be sold at a minimum of R5 million.

I therefore thank the successful bidder for helping us help the people of Tshwane by taking this property off our hands. We can tend to our core business which is to help our people live a better life of dignity. I equally thank all the other bidders for showing interest in this property.

A house for just one man under the ANC has been sold to build houses for more than 200 under the DA.

We should rethink the term RDP housing. Housing should be build as houses and that’s all. The fact that the ANC is doing very little and are still building what amounts to be a shack in many cases is now nothing for the DA to be all braggy about when these houses for 4 people are still just little new fancy shacks. We should be building lower cost, huge flat complexes in and around the cities, like in other countries.

I disagree, i would rather live in my own small free standing home. Than 3 floors up in a crammed apartment complex! I am renting a small free standing one bedroom cottage and much prefer it over an apartment complex.

Well thats ok there are lots of them around for you to choose from. In many countries in urban areas they build high rise flats which takes up less ground space and accommodate lots of people. Building free standing homes is very costly due to infrastructure. All you have to do is go to any of our ‘townships’ and see what crammed really means.
What I was primarily suggesting was that the term RDP should be changed…and quite frankly I am not in the least bit interested if you want to life in a free standing house when there are millions who life up to 6 and more in a room the size of your bathroom. To them staying in a 3 bedroom flat on the 50th floor would be luxury.

I have to agree. Given the choice of weathering the cold nights etc. I would prefer a small free room even if i had to climb a staircase to floor # 50 . P.S but i would wish for a tiny cottage
