12 000 residents are receiving running water and toilets in their homes for the first time, thanks to this DA-led coalition government. Job creation is another big priority; since taking over from the ANC, the Metro has created 4 000 job opportunities. Together with a concerted effort to root out corruption and grow the economy, the new budget will largely be spent on helping residents in poor communities (over 80%).
This is the Nelson Mandela Bay’s vision for the term:
A city that provides for infrastructure investment, sustainable economic development and job creation. We will exploit our huge tourism potential, stimulate our province’s agricultural economy and promote the growth of SMME’s, especially in our neglected townships.
A city where people feel secure. Our newly launched metro police service will work effectively, with well-trained officers, and anti-drug and gang units founded to tackle the scourge of gangsterism head on.
We want to turn NMB into a city where people know that their government cares for them, one that works to make basic services available to ALL residents.
We will embrace the politics of redress and reconciliation. All residents deserve good services. We will build proper homes and hand over title deeds in line with a fair and open housing list. We will bring dignified sanitation to informal settlements.
We will stretch every tax rand to achieve optimum outputs in the direct interest of every citizen. We will not waste our resources on the glitz and glamour of irrelevant public events, flashy cars and cadre deployment.
