Nicholas Myburgh

Executive Mayor Nicholas Myburgh has farmed in the Swellendam district for twenty years. This is his second term as executive mayor of Swellendam, this time with the constituency’s first ever overall majority.

Nicholas became involved with the DA in order to help promote the cause of Individual Freedom, Free Enterprise, and the Rule of Law. He firmly believes that the DA is the only party that can meaningfully improve people’s lives through better educational and economic opportunities for all.

Nicholas was born in Swellendam on 14 November 1962. He attended Swellendam Primary School, and matriculated in 1980 at Rondebosch Boys’ High School where he was head boy.

The Mayor is a law graduate (BA.LLB) of Stellenbosch University and also served as vice-chairman of the Students’ Representative Council (SRC).

He is a former chairman of the Swellendam Heritage Association, is a member of the Ratepayers’ Association and the Chamber of Business, and is a former chairman of the DA Constituency Committee in Swellendam. He is a member of the DA’s Western Cape Disciplinary Committee, and also serves on the Board of Trustees of the Drostdy Museum.

As executive mayor of Swellendam he inherited an extremely hostile administration and has worked tirelessly to turn around a municipality that has suffered many years of poor governance and financial mismanagement.

He has lead the formulation and implementation of a financial recovery plan, has driven the replacement of the entire senior management of the municipality, and initiated measures aimed at reconciliation, redress, diversity and improved delivery for all.

In the past three to four years the municipality has rolled out the biggest expenditure on infrastructure in the history of Swellendam.

In 2014 Swellendam Municipality (SM) received the Auditor-General’s Special Award for Most Improved Municipality in the Western Cape having obtained an Unqualified Audit Report after three successive disclaimers.

Swellendam received its first Clean Audit in 2014/15, and again in 2015/16.

In 2015 SM won the Provincial and National Govan Mbeki Housing Award for the Best Upgrade of Informal Settlement Programme in South Africa!

In 2016 SM was rated as South Africa’s Number 1 Municipality by ‘Good Governance Africa’ and the SAIRR.

He is married to Sally, and they have two children, Caitlin (17) and Philip (16).
