A newly built animal pound has been opened in the DA-led Saldanha Municipality. Located in Vredenburg, the animal pound was established because the municipality needed a facility where stray animals could be impounded and cared for.
In 2010 a resolution was taken to identify and purchase land for this specific purpose, portion 30 of the farm Eenzaamheid no 135 was identified and then purchased. In December 2012, the Impoundment of Animals and Prevention (P.N 394/2012) of Public Nuisances and Public Nuisances Arising from the Keeping of Animals (P.N 398/2012) bylaw was promulgated. The planning for the facility was done in-house in cooperation with the Swartland SPCA.
While the municipality budgeted for the construction of the pound, the Swartland SPCA was tasked with operating the facility for the Saldanha Bay Municipality once completed.
In the first phase the pound will only accommodate domestic animals because of the need to control stray dogs in the area. In the second phase of the project provision will be made to impound bigger animals such as cattle, goats, etc.
