Drakenstein Municipality has an electrification program whereby it prioritizes and rolls out the provision of electricity to informal settlements within the municipal jurisdiction area. As such, the informal settlement at Simondium consisting of 71 informal structures were electrified in August and September 2016. During the following financial year the municipality spent R4 Million on the electrification of informal settlements in its area of jurisdiction.
In addition, a donation of a piece of land to the Municipality by a farmer in the Simondium area, paved the way for the construction of the Simondium Community Hall. The hall is currently being constructed at a cost of R7m and it is expected to be completed by December 2017. In terms of the donation agreement with the former landowner, the people that resided on the land were successfully relocated to the existing informal settlement at Simondium. The families were supplied with basic services by the municipality including electricity to the 22 families in December 2016.
